Why Continuing Education Matters for Doulas

As a doula training organization, we care deeply about doulas’ access to high-quality, relevant training. This starts with foundational trainings, such as our Full Spectrum Doula Training, which we offer two times per year, but it does not stop there. BADT is honored to have held a range of continuing education courses that allow doulas to expand their toolboxes and tend to their communities in responsive ways.

While we don’t currently require certified doulas to take a certain number of continuing education (CE) hours, we do highly encourage ongoing learning, whether it is through BADT or with other organizations or community-based groups. The feedback we get from students about our CE is affirming, and we are delighted that folks in our community care deeply about their ongoing learning and skill-building.

The Benefits of Continuing Education

Very often direct service work, like birth work, may be happening primarily between you and your clients. So, unless you are taking the time and energy (which we recommend) to be in contact with other doulas, it’s possible to be and/or feel rather isolated in this work.

Continuing education courses are more formal and organized ways for folks to learn in community.

These are some of the key benefits of taking continuing education courses:

  • Exposure to new material and skills

  • Resource-sharing amongst peers

  • Networking with other birth workers

  • Peer support/community-building

  • Deeper dives into topics that are introduced in 12-week courses

  • Diversifying your practice and offerings

BADT Continuing Education Offerings

As of this writing, our current prerecorded CE course offerings include:

In 2025, we are looking forward to offering new courses, as well as some updated repeats of former courses.

We strive to offer courses our community is asking about, while also bringing in collaborating teachers we are inspired by and look up to. Stay tuned!

What to expect in BADT CE Courses

BADT takes pride in doing these differently, centering anti-oppressive practices, and in making space for flexible learning with accommodations. These are some of the elements and features you can expect in BADT CE Course:

  • A number of learning modules that include webinars (led by core teachers) and masterclasses (taught by experts in the field), as well as weekly lessons, materials and reflection questions.

  • Access to our private online community.

  • One year of access to all materials and recordings. (CE courses do not have the option of a 6-month extension.)

  • Financial accessibility opportunities! Please sign up for our newsletter and stay connected on social media for more information!

  • Automated CC in English are provided. Please send an email to info@birthingadvocacy.org for other accessibility needs.

Join Us in Community

We’d love for you to join us in the BADT community! Sign up for our email list if you’re a birth worker or aspiring birth worker, so you’ll be first to hear about new courses, open enrollment periods, and scholarship opportunities. We have a community app for students where conversations and resource-sharing happens, if you’d like to dig deeper into this conversation (and so much more)!
