The Many Holistic Uses of Human Milk Beyond Feeding

by Ashli Crew Rodriguez

Human milk, often revered as nature's perfect nourishment for infants, holds incredible value far beyond feeding.

While it’s primarily known for its role in infant nutrition, its applications stretch into holistic care practices, supporting both the physical and emotional well-being of parents and babies alike. As doulas, it’s important to recognize and educate our clients on the potential of human milk as a natural remedy in postpartum care, especially in non-traditional ways.

Personally, I’ve had the privilege of breastfeeding and chestfeeding all three of my daughters for 18+ months, and it’s been a profound experience for me.

When I became a parent, I didn’t have many examples of individuals of color breastfeeding or chestfeeding. But I have since come to learn that Black individuals do breastfeed, chestfeed, and use human milk for various purposes. Personally, I’ve used human milk in the tub for my little one, and I’ve found it incredibly helpful for diaper rash and eczema patches. It’s amazing to witness how such a simple, natural remedy can work wonders, offering comfort and healing without the need for harsh chemicals or medications.

In this blog, we’ll explore the numerous holistic ways that human milk can support families through skin care, eye health, wound healing, and much more.

Nutritional and Healing Benefits of Human Milk:

Human milk is a nutrient powerhouse packed with essential vitamins, antibodies, and growth factors that support the development of infants in the early stages of life.

But what’s fascinating is that its healing properties extend far beyond infancy, making it a versatile remedy for a variety of conditions in both babies and adults.

Rich in immune-boosting properties, human milk supports the body’s natural defense system, providing a defense against infection and disease. It also contains growth factors that help repair tissue and promote healing. These same qualities make human milk a great choice for natural remedies, from soothing sore nipples to healing skin conditions in both infants and adults.

Holistic Uses of Human Milk:

For Skin Care:

One of the most widely used benefits of human milk is its soothing and healing properties, especially for eczema, rashes, and dry skin.

When applied directly to affected areas, it can provide instant relief, reducing inflammation and promoting skin regeneration.

"I’ve used human milk in the tub for my little one and noticed how it helped soothe her skin, especially for diaper rash and eczema patches. It's been an incredibly gentle and effective remedy."

Parents can incorporate human milk into bath time or apply it directly to the skin, offering relief without the use of harsh chemicals or fragrances.

For Eye Health:

Human milk has been used as a natural remedy for eye infections such as conjunctivitis (pink eye). Due to its antibacterial properties, a few drops of milk can be applied to the eye to help clear the infection. This should always be done in consultation with a healthcare provider.

For Sore Nipples or Cracked Skin:

For breastfeeding and chestfeeding individuals, sore nipples and cracked skin are common challenges. Applying human milk to these areas can help soothe pain and promote healing, thanks to its natural antiseptic and healing properties.

As a Digestive Aid:

Human milk can also serve as a digestive aid, particularly for infants struggling with gas or upset stomachs. For parents recovering from birth, human milk can help balance the digestive system and provide relief.

For Wound Healing:

In some cultures, human milk has been used to heal wounds, cuts, and insect bites. Its natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties make it an excellent option for treating minor skin issues.

In traditional medicine, it’s been applied to treat a variety of ailments, from digestive issues to skin conditions. The power of human milk extends beyond its role in breastfeeding—it’s been a staple in communities around the world, demonstrating the deep connection between nourishment and healing.
